About one quarter of babies will suffer from colic from around age 3 weeks - and you will suffer too! All babies cry of course, but those with colic will cry relentlessly for at least three hours several times a week, usually in the evening when your partner gets home from work. This can be a stressful time for you all, but it will go away of its own accord once baby reaches about 12 weeks. In the meantime there are some things you can try to ease her discomfort and the decibel level.Symptoms Of Colic
As well as the crying and general distress, baby will often extend or pull up her legs, arching her back; and her tummy may feel bloated.The Cause Of Colic
The causes are not fully understood, although some experts believe that bottle-fed babies are more likely to be affected as they take in air through the teat. Other causes are smoking during pregnancy - this includes being in a smoky atmosphere (second-hand smoke).Other theories include an intolerance of lactose (a natural ingredient of milk), and the immaturity of her digestive system - the latter is supported by the fact that babies usually grow out of colic at around 12 weeks of age.Treatments
If you're bottle feeding you can get anti-colic teats that reduce the air intake. Change the teats as she develops as using a newborn's teat after a few weeks will mean she has to suck harder and will take in more air. You can also get colic drops from your pharmacist which break down air bubbles in her tummy. Gripe water will act in the same way.If you are breast feeding, some foods that you eat may be aggravating the problem. Possible culprits are orange juice, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, onions and cabbage.
Try massage. Rub her tummy in a clockwise direction to aid digestion.Switch on a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner so she can hear the noise. Seriously, baby heard these sort of noises while in the womb and she may be comforted by them.Cranial osteopathy may help. If the birth was difficult, a gentle realignment of bones and joints can work wonders and some mothers have found that one treatment results in a cure for colic and other ailments. With your baby in obvious distress, the relentless crying, and maybe a grumpy partner; you will be under a lot of pressure. Understand what is happening and the reasons for it, and make sure your partner does too. Talk to other moms who will reassure you that it is nothing you are doing wrong.

Embarrassing as it may be, we have all suffered from constipation at one time in our life or another. According to the National Health Interview Survey as many as 3 million Americans suffer from frequent if not chronic constipation. While constipation is not recognized as a degenerative disease or serious disorder, people who are constipated often feel bloated, uncomfortable and even sluggish. Constipation by itself is miserable enough, but sufferers often experience painful bowel movements that can become compounded by hemorrhoids that form due to straining.To understand constipation, it is important to understand how our digestive system works. When we eat, food is ground up in our stomachs so it can be digested. This "liquid" food passes into the small intestine where nutrients are extracted. It then moves on to the colon, where water is removed, allowing a stool to form. If too much water is extracted from the stool as it passes through the colon, it can become hard and difficult to pass leaving you constipated.There are a number of reasons why people get constipated. These include not eating enough dietary fiber, not drinking enough liquids (water), lack of exercise, ignoring the "urge" to have a bowel movement and plain old stress. Other causes can include having a lazy colon that does not contract properly, causing waste materials to pass through the colon slowly, food allergies that can cause the colon to contract, or mechanical obstructions that inhibit the movement of waste materials. Many prescription drugs and certain neurological disorders can also slow down the movement of waste materials through the colon. Constipation can also be brought on by an abuse of laxatives that over time can damage the nerve cells in the colon and interfere with its ability to contract properly.Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to relieve chronic constipation naturally.Recommendations For WellnessConsume a high fiber diet made up of lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. If that is not possible, incorporate a dietary fiber supplement such as psyllium hulls, Natures Sunshine's Nature's Three or their Irritable Bowel Fiber into your daily health routine. Dietary fiber holds water and help to keep the stool soft, while added bulk help to move the stool through the colon.If other fiber supplements fail in your attempt to become regular, try taking Chitosan (a form of dietary fiber) along with vitamin C. The chitosan binds to fats from the foods we eat making the stool soft and smooth. The vitamin C helps to activate the chitosan in the stomach.Drink plenty of water, especially if you are taking supplemental fiber.Try eating a few dried prunes or drinking some prune juice. In addition to adding fiber, prunes have a mild laxative effect.Avoid sugar and other processed foods.Begin a regular exercise program to help promote normal bowel movements.If you think allergies are the cause of your constipation, try an elimination diet to help you to identify what may be triggering your body and causing your colon to contract.Meditate, do yoga, go for a walk. Do things that will allow you to reduce your stress levels and help your body to relax. This can help relax your colon.Get a colonic to flush out any old fecal matter that may be trapped within the colon or try a colon cleanse.Take a good probiotic such as acidopholis or bifidophilus to help promote a healthy environment within the colon.Peppermint (3910-9) has a long history of helping relax the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract.Supplementation with magnesium and large doses of vitamin C, have a mild laxative effect on the body.If all else fails, herbs such as casgara segrada, turkey rhubarb or herbal combinations such as Natures Sunshine's LBS II and LB-X can be used to evacuate the colon. While these should be used with caution, they are less aggressive than many commercial laxatives that are available at the supermarket.

Who do you know who is feeling stuck, under-performing, or dealing with frustration and upset?These folks might be suffering from FLAT WORLD THINKING SYNDROME! (FWTS)"Flat World Thinking Syndrome" is the number one issue standing between predictable performance and breakthrough performance. Allow me to illustrate...For hundreds of years (and perhaps thousands for that matter) mankind believed the earth was flat. Their perspective on the universe held the planets and the sun revolving around the earth. Sailors were afraid to lose sight of land on sea going journeys because they knew if they went too far, they'd fall off the edge.The fear of falling off the edge of the earth really put the dampers on exploration. The fear was the result of "FWTS." Then comes along Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), who in 1612 confirms the Copernican theory using his newly designed telescope, that the earth is indeed round and the sun is actually the center of the universe.Was Galileo's discovery readily accepted by the thinkers of his day? NOT AT ALL! In fact, he was given the choice at the Inquisition of 1632 to recant his theoryor die. He decided dying sounded like a tough option so lived until his death as an old man under house arrest.Moral of the story: Flat World thinkers are not necessarily interested in new perspectives. They're interested in the comfort zone and being RIGHT! As a result, they stay stuck."Flat World Thinking Syndrome" shows up in our business lives.The Business Flat World Perspective:
There are hundreds of illustrations we can pull from the business world. Perspectives and strategies that worked in 1982 are outdated today. For example:1. The Customer Is Always Right! (FWTS Model): Let's face it; the customer is NOT always right. Yet for years, we tell our people the customer is always right! What's the danger in this message? Your credibility! If I'm the new hire on your team, it doesn't take long for me to figure out what you're saying and what I'm experiencing are two different things. My B.S. meter goes up and your credibility goes down. Credibility goes down and then trust begins to erode. And then?well, you get the picture.I recently reviewed a company's new employee orientation process. One of the first items out of the trainer's mouth was: "The customer is always right!" You could feel the eyeballs roll and resistance increase by the audience members. That's the FWTS method.New approach: I believe the solution is to talk straight with the new hire and all employees. Tell them the customer isn't always right. Tell them the truth. Then coach the team on the "game" we play: to have every customer hang up the phone or walk out the door saying, "I Got WOWed!".With the "I Got WOWed!" goal in mind, you'd coach me on the skills I need to win. You'll help me see what a "good business decision" is built upon; you'll help me gain confidence in dealing with the three to five most common customer upsets. Then you'll support me in figuring out how to help customers leave the experience saying: "WOW!".Which leads me to...2. Training Employees: I've heard it said, "Why spend money on training employees? They'll just leave." That's a Flat world, narrow perspective on the topic.My thought is: You might train them and they might leave; but what if you don't train them and they STAY? Which is worse?In fact, you can build a solid "Return on Investment" case for effectively training new hires. Here are but a few examples:- With effective training, you set people up to win sooner in their job-and people like to win!- Give employees life skills and they'll hang around longer if they believe they're gaining skills they can use down the road.- You send a message that you're willing to invest in your human capital!- Customers have a better and more consistent experience with educated, informed, trained employees!- The rest of your team will experience fewer headaches and hassles because folks know how to succeed on their job!How's that for a quick list!Let's bottom-line this topic: You cut turnover as a result of the above benefits. People will stay longer where they feel valued and are set-up to win! You improve performance and productivity-and who can argue with those results?Moral of the story: Be on the lookout for Flat World Thinking Syndrome! Challenge the sacred cows in your organization! Be willing to examine old methods in order to produce new results! Be open to new possibilities. After all, who knows enough about life to be sceptical?And one more thing...have some fun in the process!2005
